In conversation, the Icelanders are wonderfully free of the English habit of meaning something other than what is actually said. Once a subject has been brought up for discussion, all aspects of it can be thoroughly and honestly explored – though this does not mean that all topics of conversation are allowed. Never ask how much an Icelander earns, and in no circumstances criticise his driving.

Despite the long tradition of swapping insults, there has never been an Icelandic tradition of gestures, rude or otherwise. So they import them. For instance, they have adopted the German one of tapping the side of the forehead to indicate stupidity. This is seen as genuinely offensive. If a driver intends making this sign to someone who has cut in on him while driving in town, he will first scan the road ahead to ensure there is no set of traffic lights in sight.
